More sun on Tuesday, showers return Wednesday

(Monday Evening, April, 22 2013) It will be a clear and cool night across central New York tonight. Temperatures in many spots will drop into the low 30s. Another sunny day is expected Tuesday with temperatures rising into the low 60s.Showers will return on Wednesday.
Quiet weather will remain over central New York through the day Tuesday as high pressure dominates our weather. High pressure extends from New England southwest down through the Appalachian Mountains. This is part of a dry air mass that allows for big swings in temperature from morning to afternoon. Absent the heating from the sun temperature can drop quickly at night (like tonight) Once the sun comes up Tuesday morning temperature will rise equally fast. That’s why it may be cool enough Tuesday morning to where a jacket but by mid afternoon you could be wearing a short sleeved shirt.

Eventually, a cold front will arrive in Central New York Wednesday. Thus, mid-week clouds and showers are in the forecast. Our computer models seem to be keying in on the afternoon as the most likely time for showers in central New York. Cooler air will move in behind the cold front for Thursday and Friday as high temperatures target the middle 50s. A separate weather system in the upper atmosphere is forecast to arrive later Thursday and may bring some late day showers. The upper level system will be slow to depart so we think it is quite likely showers will linger into Thursday night and may be just departing the Adirondacks or Tug Hill Plateau early in the day Friday.

The early outlook for the weekend points to a return to seasonably temperatures as high temperatures are forecast to reach the low-to-mid 60s. However, less certain is if we’ll have dry weather, particularly Sunday, as computer models are offering opposing outcomes. Therefore, keep in mind when making plans that changes may be made to the weekend forecast as the week unfolds.
