Warm and breezy with late day showers/thunder

(Wednesday Midday, April 24, 2013) It will be a breezy and mild afternoon across central New York. However, as a cold front moves closer late this afternoon, we expect showers and thunderstorms to move in from the west with some heavy rain and gusty winds. That rain will move out overnight and look for a cooler day Thursday with a decent amount of sunshine.
A southwest flow ahead of a cold front located to our west is providing us with a milder weather today. However, this warm air will be quickly pushed out of the area this evening as the front approaches.

The aforementioned southwest flow will provide warm breezy winds that will allow a return of moisture to central New York. While south winds won’t be as strong as last Friday (when we had gusts past 30 mph) they’ll be sufficient enough to get our temperatures into the 70s this afternoon. Just like last Friday, as this front presses eastward across our area, some heavier rain and perhaps some thunder, will occur between 5 pm and 7 pm. Immediately behind the front, temperatures will drop into the 40s by early to mid evening.

Behind the cold front, much cooler air will arrive for Thursday and Friday. Additionally, computer models seem to be keying in on a separate weather feature, or upper level energy, that may impact the region overnight Thursday in the form of scattered showers. This upper level system will be slow to depart so we think it is quite likely showers will linger into the day Friday, mainly east of route 81.

The early outlook for the weekend points to a return to temperatures in the 60s, and mainly dry weather. Looks like a good weekend to get out and enjoy some gorgeous Spring weather.
