Wind, weather damage reported around Central New York

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Emergency and utility personnel responded to numerous reports of downed wires and trees in the city of Syracuse and beyond on Thursday morning.

The high winds forced Gillette Road Middle School in the North Syracuse School District to close as part of its wind monitoring plan.

Multiple streets were closed in the city of Syracuse while crews cleaned up downed wires or damaged utility poles.

The highest wind speeds at Hancock Airport reached 55 miles per hour before noon on Thursday.

Winds were strong enough to down a tree on James Street near the corner of Hampton Road in Syracuse; and 7th North Street between Hiawatha Boulevard and Terminal Street was shut down for a prolonged period of time.
