Moderate, widespread snow arrives late Tuesday night: Dave Longley's Blog

Winter storm watches are now in effect for all of CNY later Tuesday night and Wednesday. I'll break down the timing of the storm.
(WSYR-TV, Syracuse)  We will enjoy quiet weather both today and tomorrow, with some sun and high temperatures in the mid and upper 20s.  The ironic thing is that we're missing out on snow today (Monday) which is sliding by to our south.  If only the Super Bowl was today, they'd have snow to contend with.  As that storm slides by to our south, the canopy of clouds over us will move away from us, giving us more sunshine this afternoon.

Tuesday will be quiet as well as a bubble of high pressure will be over us, giving us some sun, and high temperatures near 30.

The messy weather will arrive after midnight Tuesday.  So you're even safe to go out and about Tuesday evening.  The commute Wednesday morning is not going to be pleasant.  The period of heavier snow will run from after midnight Tuesday through Noon Wednesday.  In that 12 hour period, an average snowfall of 5-9" is due in CNY.  I'm still working out the details on snow totals, as a lot will end up being determined by the track of the storm.  It will be a fast moving storm, so I really can't see snowfall of a foot or more for us...at this point.

Here's a breakdown of the storm for us, this Monday morning.

  • Widespread snow arrives after midnight Tuesday night
  • Heaviest snowfall is between midnight Tuesday night and Noon Wednesday
  • Expect a very slow and difficult morning commute Wednesday morning
  • Snowfall across ALL of CNY looks to be in the 5-9", perhaps 6-10" range when all is said and done
  • The weather quiets down for Thursday and Friday with only limited lake effect snow.
This is not a bread and milk storm, but it will make things very messy around here Wednesday morning.
