Sochi, Russia (SportsNetwork.com) - Swedish hockey star Nicklas Backstrom missed Sunday's gold medal game against Canada because of an unspecified reason, but reports later in the day said the Washington Capitals forward failed a doping test.
Yahoo! Sports and Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet cited a Swedish Olympic official as saying Backstrom tested positive for a banned substance found in an allergy medicine he has routinely taken.
Backstrom was in the original lineup for Sunday's game, but was scratched just before the warmups.
Sweden went on to drop a 3-0 decision to Canada.
