Tire disposal fee: Your Stories Question

If you buy a new car, you may notice a “tire disposal” fee on the contract.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – If you buy a new car, you may notice a “tire disposal” fee on the contract.

The fee is part of a state law that has been in effect since 2003. The law was recently extended to 2016.

The law is meant to prevent the dumping of tires, which can quickly become mosquito breeding sites or fuel for fires.

The law requires that for each new tire sold – even if they’re on a new car – a $2.50 fee must be charged.

The fee goes through the dealership or tire company.

They are required to collect the money and then turn it over to the state, but the company or dealership is permitted to keep 25 cents.

The state is using the money to eliminate tire stockpile sites containing millions of tires.
