Why do gas prices go up this time of year: Your Stories

Central New Yorkers typically see gas prices on the rise this time of year.
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Central New Yorkers typically see gas prices on the rise this time of year.

One of the main reasons is the switch from winter to summer gasoline blends.

The difference is measured in terms of how fast the gas evaporates at a given temperature.

The more volatile the gas is, the more easily it evaporates.

In the winter, gas has a higher evaporation rate than summer gas.

Summer gas has about 1.7 percent more energy than winter gas.

The difference means summer gas provides slightly better mileage, but it’s also more expensive to produce – an expense that’s passed along to consumer.
