The Salvation Army is holding their annual Turn-Around Jumpers event, a fundraiser for the organization that features a three on three basketball tournament. Syracuse University Associate Head Coach Adrian Autry and Salvation Army Director of Development Andrew Sabbaghzadeh stopped by to discuss what’s new this year and what you can expect to see again.
The tournament has corporate, youth and adult divisions allowing people of all age groups to compete. It will be played in double elimination style with female and male divisions available at all age levels. Autry says the event is a great opportunity for kids and adults to get together and have some camaraderie as a community all in one place.
In years leading up to this, Mike Hopkins served as the honorary chair for Turn-Around Jumpers and, having since moved on to Washington, his role had to be replaced. Sabbaghzadeh says it was a natural choice to have Autry become the honorary chair for the event, especially since this is his sixth year being a part of it. Autry says as a team, SU Men’s Basketball values the importance of supporting an organization such as the Salvation Army. He says they see the importance of being involved with an event like Turn-Around Jumpers that positively affects the community.
Sabbaghzadeh says new this year for the event is the corporate reception happening the day before the tournament. He says there is no longer a two night tournament, instead the first night will be a reception at Le Moyne for all corporate sponsors, sponsored by Peppino’s. In addition, Sabbaghzadeh says they even have big name national sponsors involved and has enjoyed watching the event grow over the years. They have raised over $340,000 in the past seven years thanks to this event. The best part is that every dollar raised stays in Syracuse and goes to the Salvation Army.
Turn-Around Jumpers will be held June 9-10. SU Legends Reception will be held on Friday, June 9 with check-in from 5:30-6:30pm at Le Moyne College Athletic Center. During check-in sponsors and competitors will get the opportunity to meet some SU players and Coach Autry. It will also feature a dunk and 3-point shooting contest. On Saturday, June 10 the tournament will start at 8am featuring corporate, youth and adult divisions.
Entry for the corporate division is $250 a team, with youth and adult divisions being $100 a team until May 12. If you register for any of the non-corporate divisions before May 12, you can save $20 with the early-bird registration. The registration deadline for the divisions is May 31.
