Local musicians are collaborating to introduce opera in a new way. Syracuse Pops composer Lou Lemos has teamed up with Syracuse Opera’s artistic director Christian Capocaccia to break down the barriers between genres and show audiences the true story of opera.
“We’re trying to get everyone to understand that opera is music and that it’s really beautiful if you just sit back and listen,” said Lemos.
“It’s about telling a story with music. That’s what we’re trying to do,” adds Capocaccia.
The duo came up with the idea while sitting back and talking. “I went to see his show,” said Capocaccia, referring to the Broadway Breakout show the Syracuse Pops Chorus performed back in April of 2019. “I was hit by how entertained I was. You know, a musical…it’s not something we have in Italy so I don’t know it well at all but it’s so close to opera.”
One message this concert hopes to share with audiences is that opera is not stuffy. It’s meant to be a spectacular show that entertains.
The program will include opera, musical theater and rock n roll featuring Todd Hobin, Syracuse Pops Chorus and Syracuse Opera Chorus with special guests Alexandra Deshorties, Letizia and Lucia Helgren.
The concert will be Sunday, August 18th from 3 pm to 5 pm at Paper Mill Island in Baldwinsville. It is free to attend. For more information, visit SyracusePopsChorus.org
