Black History Month Business Spotlight Shines on Illustrator London Ladd

As Seen On

For our final Black History Month Business Spotlight we sat down with incredibly talented local illustrator London Ladd.

He has drawn illustrations for books on Oprah, Martin Luther King Jr., Fredrick Douglas and more.

Ladd obtained an associate degree in art from Onondaga Community College before transferring to Syracuse University.

At SU Ladd met professor of illustration, Bob Dacey, who introduced him to children’s book illustrations and Ladd became hooked.

Ladd said what he enjoys drawing most depends on the story, “Regardless of race, whether, you know, male or female I don’t care. It’s the story, I think, and the journey of the character or characters or the movement. That’s what really gets my passion flowing.”

You can see some of Ladds paintings around the city of Syracuse. Murals on the railroad bridge at South Salina Street near Taylor Street are Ladd’s work.

The support he received from the community while completing the project meant a great deal to him.

When asked what is the biggest challenge he faces as a black illustrator, he said finding projects that fit him.

Ladd visits schools in Central New York running art workshops. He gave the hosts of Bridge Street an art lesson.  Challenging them to draw abolitionist Fredrick Douglas.
