Chocolate lovers and marathon runners are invited to take on a run or walk and enjoy some sweet treats too all while helping Kelleigh’s Cause.
Kelleigh’s Cause was created by Kelleigh Gustafson and her family to help fight Arteriovenous Malformation. Arteriovenous Malformation or AVM is an abnormal connection between arteries and veins most commonly in the brain or spine. Kelleigh was diagnosed with the disease at 4 years old.
When asked what is it like living with AVM, Kelleigh said, “What’s hardest for me is that I’m a very active person and having this and having the ability to hemorrhage, I have to really cutback on my sports,” she added. “So I tried to do everything, I liked basketball, soccer, anything you could think of I tried it. However, because of the risk I have I was always concerned if I get hit in the head or something.”
Kelleigh has had nearly 100 procedures done since she was diagnosed and actively works with her family to help fund research to fight the disease. Funds raised will be used to support the translational research in the field of vascular anomalies.
The Chocolate Challenge is a 5k walk/run and a 10k run. If you wish to participate the challenge will begin Saturday, July 28th at Le Moyne College Campus with both races starting at 8:00 am. Aside from getting the traditional race shirt and medal for finishing, runners will also be given chocolate treats from local Syracuse Chocolatiers.
