Give the gift of life by becoming an organ, eye and tissue donor and encourage others to do the same. That’s the message the Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network is spreading this April during National Donate Life Month.
“Thinking about this decision now is so important because if you don’t make it for yourself now, your family is going to have to, maybe on your behalf, later,” said Nancy Ryan from the Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network.
Ryan said it’s very easy to register. Most donors sign up while at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Even though registering is simple only 35% of New Yorkers are organ donors which is 20% lower than the national average.
Anyone 16 or older in New York state can register to be an organ, eye and tissue donor. Ryan said there have been donors well into their nineties who’ve been able to give the gift of life.
