One of America’s most beloved comic strips of all time comes to life on stage in Central New York, as the Auburn Players Community Theatre takes on “Li’l Abner.” The hit musical is drawn from the legendary satirical strip by Al Capp, which ran in newspapers nationwide from 1934 to 1977. It told the story of hillbilly life in Dogpatch, USA, home of the naïve Li’l Abner Yokum and the beautiful Daisy Mae, whose main goal in life was to marry Li’l Abner.
The Broadway show was originally mounted by theatre legend Michael Kidd, with lyrics from the immortal Johnny Mercer.
The Auburn Players production runs May 9-11 at 7:30pm, and May 12th at 2:00pm, at the Irene Bisgrove Theater at Cayuga Community College. General admission tickets are $20. Student tickets are $14. You can find more information at AuburnPlayers.org or 315-702-7832.
Shane Heidecker and Jessica Alexander portray “Li’l Abner” and “Daisy Mae,” and they gave us a preview with the song “Namely You.”
