Open enrollment for Medicare is quickly approaching, which means it’s time to take a step back and reevaluate your needs ahead of the new year.  Plans can change from year to year and sometimes choosing a Medicare plan can be confusing.

Laura Mongeon, the Executive Director of UnitedHealthcare, Medicare and Retirement in New York, explains all there is to know about Medicare and it’s importance. The enrollment period runs until December 7th and Mongeon says now is a critical time to make decisions regarding your health coverage.

There are many parts included in Medicare and here is a breakdown of those parts:  Part A is the hospital insurance, Part B is the medical insurance, Part C is Medicare Advantage that combines A and B and finally Part D covers drug prescriptions (this is included in most plans but Mongeon says you should always check to make sure).

Some key questions to ask yourself before seeking coverage:

  • Is the plan a good fit for your budget?
  • Are your medications covered?
  • Is hearing, dental and vision care coverage important to you?
