Friday, June 21st is the longest day of the year and the official start of summer. To celebrate the official start of summer and the longest day of the year, the Alzheimer’s Association and Champions Fitness Center in Cicero are shedding light on a disease that is the sixth leading cause of death in America.
For Personal Trainer Laurie Beth Pestle the disease is something she’s seen firsthand. “Alzheimer’s’ is personal to me; my mother passed away from it. I have a relative who has been diagnosed as early onset,” she said.
After going to the owners and manager of the gym and reaching out to her colleagues, Pestle was able to set up a daylong event to raise funds for the cause.
“The Longest Day is a great way to show support, raise funds, raise awareness, and we celebrate it on the summer solstice. It’s the day with the most light, it’s the day we fight,” says Grace Barney of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Money raised for Alzheimer’s will go to a variety of services such as support group for families, care consultations, research, and more.
“All money raised really just goes to supporting anyone who might be affected by Alzheimer’s disease,” says Barney.
There will be group fitness classes from 5:15am to 12pm at the fitness location in Cicero. Classes will include Zumba, kickboxing, Pilates, swim lessons, and more. Donations can be made in person or online and you do not need to be a member of Champions Fitness to participate. “Anyone can come, make a donation, and exercise,” says Pestle.
Champions Fitness is located at 7687 Frontage Road in Cicero, NY. For more information visit Act.Alz.org.
