“Freezin’ for a Reason” Oneida Shores Polar Plunge for Special Olympics

Bridge Street

They don’t pay to play. Over 3,000 Special Olympics athletes from Central New York train and compete in 22 Olympic style sports year round at no cost to them or their families. Events like the Oneida Shores Polar Plunge help defray charges so athletes can focus on their events.

In it’s 13th year the polar plunge will have you “freezin’ for a reason”. Father of Special Olympic athlete Evan, Todd Worden, has taken the plunge multiple times in the past 5 years and said he’s addicted to it. “He {Evan} was born with a rare genetic syndrome, so we started Team Evan and we try to do four plunges a year across New York State. It’s definitely worth it to see the fundraising and the money going towards athletes of Special Olympics,” Worden said. He hopes his son will be able to participate in the Special Olympic games one day.

Special Olympics New York is celebrating 50 years. Anyone who raises $100 will get a commemorative sweatshirt, perfect for warming them up after their plunge. Director of Development Cassandra Rucker from the Special Olympics New York central region said getting lots of small donations really helps. “We’re really asking our plungers to do it $5 or $10 at a time, for friends like Evan,” Rucker said.

Over $800,000 has been raised since 2007 at the Oneida Shores Polar Plunge.

The Oneida Shores Polar Plunge is happening Sunday, December 9th at Oneida Shores park located at 9400 Bartell Road in Brewerton. Registration begins at 10am and the plunge starts at 1pm.

If you cannot make it to the event you can still fundraise to support the cause and get a t-shirt. For more information visit http://events.nyso.org/site/TR/Plunge/POLARPLUNGE?pg=entry&fr_id=1831.
