Comedian and actor Kevin Hart is moving from city to city in search of talented stand-up comics for his hit Comedy Central show Hart of the City. On its third season, Hart’s search brings him to CNY.
Meet Travis Blunt, a local funnyman from Syracuse who made the cut to take the stage this season. He was called in for an invite-only audition after Hart saw him perform here in CNY, explaining that he had been noticed—simply stated—because of his “life experience, and people can relate to it.”
Having grown through issues racial, financial, and otherwise, Blunt’s material is sure to strike a personal chord within every member of his audience. “That’s my shtick, really,” he says. “My life.”
Surprisingly, Blunt has only been a comic for nine years. Although he grew up watching the greats such as George Carlin, Chris Rock, Cedric the Entertainer—whoever else appeared on BET’s ComicView—he never had any childhood dreams of being a comedian. Instead, he pursued a career in football. But then his sports scholarship fell through, and the harsher side of reality hit him, and he found himself stocking shelves overnights at Tops.
Fortunately, like so many comedians before him, he found the funny side of abjection and took the step to bring it to the stage. And obviously it paid off.
On his experience filming this season of Hart of the City, Blunt notes that Kevin Hart was actually a fun guy. “They tell you beforehand don’t be awestruck,” said Blunt, “but it’s kinda hard, like this is one of the #1 entertainers in the world.” Despite that, Hart turned out to be pretty cool and personal, not the type of celebrity to shut off behind the scenes and look at his phone.
Travis Blunt will appear on season 3 of Hart of the City June 28 at 11pm on Comedy Central.
