It was 1959 when Coach Ben Schwartzwalder lead the Syracuse University Football team to a winning season and a national championship. And with a team of greats including Ernie Davis, Dick Easterly and Gerhard Schwedes, the team is considered one of the best in the University’s History.
Schwedes, who was captain of the 1959 team recalled a bond like no other even amidst the height of segregation. And even as they headed down south for the Cotton Bowl in Texas, the team maintained that bond no matter what.
Today, 60 years later Schwedes recalls the memories of his time off the field fondly and looks forward to celebrating with his teammates this weekend.
