It’s an important time of year for people 65 and older: the Medicare open enrollment period is underway. But finding the right plan can be a challenge and quite stressful.
Kinney Drugs is trying to make it easier, with a free program for seniors to help them learn about the healthcare coverage available to them.
“It can be really confusing” says Dr. Shannon Miller, PharmD and Director of Patient Outcomes & Pharmacy Technology Optimization with Kinney Drugs. “There are over 30 plans that are available, and you want to make sure you pick the right plan for your budget and also the medications you are taking.”
Miller says anyone – whether you fill your prescriptions at Kinney Drugs or not – can take advantage of the free service. No appointment is needed, and the process of looking at plan options only takes about ten minutes.
“We sit with the patient and ask what’s important to you, like if budget is important and you want the cheapest plan, we’ll show you what the three cheapest plans are and go through what the pros and cons of each of those are and then maybe we’ll look at the other ones.”
Pharmacists will consider what medications you take when looking for the right plan for you. Sometimes, drugs require pre-authorization or often the prescription benefits differ from plan-to-plan. If you’re not a regular Kinney Drugs customer, simply bring your list of current medications for the pharmacist to review.
“It’s just important to us to be able to provide this service to our seniors because we know it can be pretty confusing” adds Miller.
Kinney Drugs has nearly 100 full-service drug stores located throughout New York and Vermont, including many all-around Central New York.
The Medicare open enrollment period continues until December 7th and you are encouraged to stop into your nearest Kinney Drugs before then to review all the available Medicare plans.
