St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center has opened the first dedicated and comprehensive heartburn treatment center in Central New York. The Heartburn Center has a full team of physicians to address the disease beyond just the symptoms.
Gastroesophageal disease affects one third of the U.S population, and there are over 20 million people in the U.S currently taking medication to ease their symptoms of reflux. However, there are many dangers to taking over-the-counter medications to self-treat, and they can cause serious side effects. Dr. John Sun says that most of these medications are only meant to be used for short periods of time, and that people who suffer for long periods of time should be seeking professional treatment.
The treatment center’s staff includes gastroenterologists, surgeons, dieticians, and even psychologists. Doctors Atul Maini and Borys Buniak both say that having these specialists can help properly diagnose different issues that can lead to acid reflux.
