On Screen with Brian Miller 2.28.17

Bridge Street

Brian Miller’s On Screen Review for the week looks at “Captain Fantastic” and “Doctor Strange”  now available on Blu-Ray and many On-Demand services.

“Captain Fantastic” tells the story of a father who is determined to raise his six kids in the forests of the Pacific Northwest with an education based on critical thinking, being around nature and physical activity. Due to unexpected consequences, he and his children are forced to venture into the real world and encounter experiences they’re unfamiliar with. Miller says that this movie is one of those small scale movies that gets overshadowed by the big blockbusters but very much worth watching. It’ll be especially enjoyable if you like quirky family comedies mixed with strong moments of drama. He gives the film 4 out of 5 stars.

“Doctor Strange” is based from the Marvel film franchise but does not involve superheroes. It gives us a glimpse into the life of neurosurgeon, Dr. Stephen Strange, who after a car accident looks further than traditional medicine to heal. That is when a sorcerer takes him under his wing and ends up training him to fight evil. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Doctor Strange and Miller says did a fantastic job in the role. Miller reminds us that this film was nominated for Best Production Design at the Oscars and for very good reason. The visual effects are stunning but Miller believes they might have ultimately stole the show and the story was lacking. He gives the film 3 out of 5 stars.
