The Redhouse Arts Center kicks off their all new season with Artistic Director Hunter Foster at the helm. To usher in his first official season at the theater, they’ve chosen a groundbreaking musical that is very much relevant today.
Foster and his wife, Choreographer Jennifer Cody came together to put the production on in a new way for the Central New York Theater Company. For Cody, the choice to open the season with “Rent” was an easy one.
“I think there are three shows that have really moved the needle forward in musical theater,” she said. “First it was “Hair” and then “Rent” and now “Hamilton” and so I thought it was a great way to start his first season at The Redhouse.
The Redhouse production is a new experience for the space because they’ve chosen to produce the show in the round.
“All the action takes place on all four sides and we have a couple scenes where actors will be sitting right next to you,” he said. “So it’s really an immersive experience.”
“There’s not a bad seat because some scenes will be on scaffolding above you,” says Cody. She says that even if you come twice you might see a totally different show based on where you sit.
“Rent” runs from September 19 through September 29 at The Redhouse. For tickets and information visit TheRedHouse.org.
