A non-profit association is helping Central New York business owners achieve their goals through mentorship and education.

SCORE has 300+ chapters around the USA, including one in Syracuse, and over 11,000 volunteers nationwide.

“All of us have some type of business background” says Jeff Shapiro, President of The Syracuse SCORE Chapter.  “We volunteer to help folks that want to start their own business, are looking to develop their business plans, try to define their vision, and we do that through one-on-one mentoring at no cost.  We also help businesses that are currently operating and we help them develop new approaches, new strategies to help grow their business more effectively.”

Formerly known as The Service Corps of Retired Executives, their volunteers range from their late 20s to well into their 80s. The common ground for all the volunteers is that they desire to grow and achieve the goals of small businesses within their communities.

Shapiro retired after almost 40 years in the medical device industry. He says that he enjoys that SCORE helps him engage, network, stay active, and pay it forward.

“I feel like I make a difference” he says, “and you get to see people that have an idea but don’t know exactly what to do with it for the next step, and I’m part of that process that helps them figure out ‘how do i start moving ahead effectively?’
