UnitedHealthcare Community Care Award

Bridge Street

The UnitedHealthcare Community Care award was created to support small businesses and their nonprofit partners in the development of new & innovative ideas to enhance wellness and health.

After receiving dozens of entries, one winner was chosen from five finalists receiving $10,000 for their winning idea.  The competition took place last Thursday and was held similar to the show “Shark Tank” in which the finalists presented their entries to judges with a 5 minute presentation. Don Napier from UnitedHealthcare said the award is relatively new and, with the acquisition of Pomco, they wanted to show support to the community by bringing the award here locally.

Winning Team Members Jeff Knaus from the Digital Hyve and Lynn Hy from the Food Bank of Central New York said their winning idea is a program they made that uses marketing to show people where a food pantry will be. It will help market the mobile food pantry program through the Food Bank which helps the unmet need for hunger in the community.

Knaus said the program utilizes the data from Google and social media to hone in on people they think will need them the most, like people with lower incomes or people interested in the SNAP program. Then they can cater to people with the mobile food pantry, distributing perishable items, like vegetables and meat items, to people in the community.  Areas where there aren’t easily accessible food pantries, will now have a great program that  brings food to them directly by using a van.
