Finding Neverland, the Broadway musical-adaptation of the Oscar-winning 2004 film starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet is now on stage in Syracuse. Touring the country, composer Scott Frankel’s original music paired with the plot of the movie sprinkles more than just a pinch of fairy dust upon the truly fantastical story of how Peter Pan came to be.
The play follows J.M. Barrie (played by Jeff Sullivan), a Scottish playwright who never quite gave up his childhood even after having grown up. He is “a struggling playwright,” according to actor Ruby Gibbs, “who is struggling to find inspiration for his next show, and suddenly he meets this young woman [Sylvia (played by Gibbs)] with four young boys.” The bond
The play “goes between reality…and imagining,” says Sullivan, as it allows the reality of Barrie and Sylvia and the boys’ world to be tinged with the magic that theater is capable of, bringing closer the story of Peter Pan with the story of “how Peter became Pan.”
This is a play that is sure to lead the whole audience to the second star to the left and straight on ‘til morning!
