Harriet Tubman Day Celebration In Auburn

Community

Harriet Tubman Day has been an American holiday observed on March 10th since President George H.W. Bush proclaimed it in 1990. In 2003 New York State proclaimed state-wide observance. And for the first time, in 2019, the New York State Equal Rights Heritage Center will celebrate Harriet Tubman Day. “The City of Auburn has always celebrated it. But we decided this year with the opening of the Equal Rights Heritage Center and also the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park becoming a national park, it was just time to do Harriet some justice that she deserved,” says Courtney Kasper, from the NYS Equal Rights Heritage Center.

“It’s a wonderful gesture that they’re doing this for Aunt Harriet,” says Pauline Copes Johnson, great-great-grandniece of Harriet Tubman, who will be accepting the City of Auburn’s proclamation of The Harriet Tubman Day Ceremony. “She deserves all the honor she can get. I hope that everybody like me would be able to do that and preserve her legacy.”

Celebrate Harriet Tubman Day Sunday, March 10th at the New York State Equal Rights Heritage Center located at 25 South Street in Auburn. It is free and open to the public. A special program will be from 12pm to 2pm.  Local artisans and food vendors will be onsite from 10am to 4pm offering specialty items, like Tubman truffles and Tubman cookies, named in honor of Harriet Tubman. A prayer service will be held with special honors for Pauline Copes Johnson at 3pm at the Apostolic Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Harriet Tubman National Historical Park and Seward House Museum will also be open with special hours and giving tours from 1pm to 5pm. And to cap off the night there will be an open mic jam held at the Auburn Public Theater from 7pm to 9pm.
