‘Kinky Boots’ Tour Comes to CNY

Community

The advertisements for the musical “Kinky Boots” show off flashy footwear and fierce drag queens, but until you see the show, you won’t understand why it’s known as ‘Broadway’s Huge-Hearted Hit’. The show leaves the audience not only singing and dancing their way out of the theater, but also has them taking home strong messages of acceptance and celebrating individuality.

Based on a true events, the musical is inspired by a 2005 British film of the same name that was based on a BBC documentary. The story centers on the character Charlie Price who finds himself taking over his family’s struggling shoe factory after his father’s unexpected death. He meets performer and drag queen Lola and notices that there could be a niche market of creating crazy boots that might help save the factory. Not all of the factory workers are as embracing of the change in direction for the company and make Lola feel unwelcome. However, by getting to know one another’s differences, all the characters learn something different about themselves and each other.

The boots are of course their own characters in the show. They are all custom made and help support the actors who have quite the workload each night. The show is full of lively dance numbers as well as powerful dramatic ballads. As actor Lance Bordelon who plays Charlie Price notes, the first time he saw the show he ‘ugly cried’ and even now being in the show everyday, he learns something new each performance.

Actress Sydney Patrick plays the role of Lauren and finds herself in ‘familiar shoes’ returning to Central New York as a Syracuse alum. She graduated from their theater department in 2014 and is very excited that some of her old professors are coming to the performances over the next three days.

If you’d like to see “Kinky Boots” on tour here in Syracuse, there are three performances at the Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater. Performances are tonight, tomorrow and Thursday (March 13th-15th) at 7:30pm. Limited tickets are still available by visiting BroadwayinSyracuse.com or the Oncenter Box Office.
