Students from seven local high schools are joining together to put on the musical “Band Geeks” through At Rise Productions.
The storyline of the musical is centered on a marching band of nine students close to extinction due to school budget cuts. The band’s captain, Elliot, and his best friend, Laura, must figure out a way to keep the band alive and save the Marching Beavers.
The musical’s music director, Nancy O’Connor, and director, Olivia De Angelis, are from Jamesville-Dewitt High School. De Angelis is planning on studying archeology and anthropology at the College of Wooster. O’Connor is looking to study piano and music directing at Berklee College of Music.
There are different student leaders each year for At Rise Productions, and student leadership gets passed down each year. Last year Jared Dunn, the founding artistic director, directed the show and O’Connor was the music director. Dunn was a senior last year and after his graduation, De Angelis assumed his role. The choreographer position was occupied by a senior last year and is now held by current senior Hannah Komar. This was the first year At Rise Productions held open auditions. O’Connor said it was a nice change since the directors were able to meet new people.
The show begins Friday, May 24 and runs through Saturday, June 1 at the Catherine Cummings Theatre at Cazenovia College located at 16 Lincklaen Street in Cazenovia. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. For more information visit AtRiseProductions.com.
