Over 450 requests for beds have been made for children in Central New York who have no place to sleep but the floor. The organization, Sleep In Heavenly Peace has teamed up with McClurg Remodeling and Construction to try and answer the need. “What a perfect opportunity to truly make a change in lives, truly make a change in lives with giving kids beds. So we’re really, really excited about it,” said Scott McClurg of McClurg Remodeling and Construction Services.
Sleep In Heavenly Peace started in Twin Falls, Idaho. A year ago it only had 7 chapters in 4 states. Today there are 141 chapters in 47 states. The growth went viral thanks to Facebook’s feature, “Returning the Favor”.
“It’s pretty simple. Build a bed. Find a kid who needs it. Give it to them,” said Jon Wright from the Sleep In Heavenly Peace Syracuse Chapter.
The beds are made of pine 2x4s. They are cut, sanded and grinded by volunteers and then delivered on the weekends. Kids aren’t just receiving bed frames, they receive the frame, mattress and bedding.
Sleep In Heavenly Peace is looking for 200 volunteers to help them on Saturday, June 15th for Bunks Across America. They will be building beds all day, hoping to beat the record of 100 beds. There are 3 different shifts offered. You don’t have to have prior experience. “Every single job is designed for anyone who wants to help,” said Jeff Pitt of the Sleep In Heavenly Peace Syracuse Chapter.

Sleep In Heavenly Peace is also always looking for blankets and bedding donations. Mattress pads are the most needed item. Donations like these allow the organization to spend more money on building materials that they need. For more information, you can visit their Facebook page as well.
