SUNY OCC’s Workforce Development Is Training Students To Get Hired

Onondaga Community College offers short-term training that leads students to good paying jobs in the area. Renate Ussery is one student who’s taking advantage of the programs. “In 2008 I was working as an insurance counselor for a large local company and I had to go out on FMLA. While I was out the market crash happened and I didn’t have a job to go back to. At the same time I found out that I was expecting. So it turns out that my son was special needs, as was the one that came after him, so I spent the last ten years taking care of the kids, learning to advocate for special needs and all of that,” said Ussery. “Now I’m ready to get back into the workforce but ten years is a huge gap so this program really offers the training on my resume to show that I know what I’m talking about and that I’m ready to get back in with both feet and do my best.”

Ussery is now enrolled in SUNY OCC’s medical billing program. The training programs are geared towards people with families and working around those schedules. Computer training is offered if students need it and medical terminology is also taught as part of the program. Students will get on-the-job training for a month as well.

“I have way more jobs right now than I have students,” said Mike Metzgar, Associate VP of Economic & Workforce Development at SUNY OCC.

SUNY OCC is holding information sessions Monday, May 20th at Mulroy Hall on campus. Information for the medical assistant program will be at 1pm and the medical billing information will follow at 2pm.

Training for medical assistant starts June 3rd and runs through March 2020. Classes are Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm.
