Chappell family welcomes home son after months away serving in Africa

Local News

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Nancy Chappell and her family waited at the airport for her son Chris on Wednesday. He was serving our country in Africa for a year.

His arrival brought mixed emotions for the Chappell family.

Nancy Chappell is the mother of Stephen Gudknecht, who was murdered last September at Chili’s restaurant in DeWitt. Chris hasn’t been home since his brother Stephen’s funeral.

“It has been an emotional roller coaster,” Nancy Chappell said.”Knowing Chris is coming home today we have had a jar for his son of Hershey kisses that were good night kisses from daddy until he came home.”

Chris was greeted by his girlfriend and son, along with his niece and nephew.

“It has been about a year now and I missed all these guys like crazy and I have to give my mom all the credit for taking control of everything while I have been gone,” he said.
