‘Friends of Onondaga Lake Bald Eagles’ oppose trail proposal

Local News

(WSYR-TV) — Protecting the symbol of our nation, the Friends of the Onondaga Lake Bald Eagles held a press conference on Wednesday on the steps of the county courthouse.

The group is concerned after Onondaga County filed an application with the DEC to build a trail through the bald eagle roosting grounds on the shore on Onondaga Lake. It’s where the group says nearly 100 eagles live year-round.
Advocates for the cause argue the trail will disturb the eagles by cutting down trees and destroying their homes.

“It’s important to their survival in the winter and so they have to be protected, the winds that come across and the lake … and if their trees are cut down it would inhibit their ability to survive,” said Diana Green, member of the advocate group.

At least 1,500 people have signed the petition against the trail.
