New York State Police say a a medical event caused a man from Baldwinsville to cross over into oncoming traffic on 481 Monday afternoon just after 3 p.m.

State Police in North Syracuse are continuing investigating the crash. Troopers say the driver, 70-year-old Thomas Fredenburg had a medical event that caused him to exit the south shoulder, cross the grassy median, and strike a guiderail. Fredenburg’s vehicle then became airborne, entered the opposing lanes of traffic and struck a 2016 Chevy Express Cube Van head-on.

He was pronounced dead at SUNY Upstate Medical University. The passenger of his car and the driver of the van are both expected to survive.
