Boeheim and Hughes lead Orange past Pittsburgh in ACC tournament

News

Elijah Hughes and Buddy Boeheim led the Syracuse Orange to a 73-59 win over Pittsburgh in the second round of the ACC Tournament on Thursday — all without the team’s leading scorer, Tyus Battle, in the lineup.

Battle suffered an apparent back/hip injury after a fall in the team’s regular-season finale against Clemson. It was only hours before the game it was announced he wouldn’t play.

Missing the bulk of the team’s offense in Battle, Hughes and Boeheim stepped up — but things didn’t start to fully click until the second half.

Pittsburgh held a 36-30 lead at halftime.

Boeheim scored a team-high 20 points and had 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Hughes and senior guard Frank Howard each had 18 points.

Pascal Chukwu provided a big help on the defensive end. The 7-foot-2 center blocked 6 shots to go along with his productive 7 points and 9 rebounds.

The Orange will play Duke in the ACC Quarterfinals Thursday night at 9 p.m.
