SOPRON, HUGARY – WNBA Champion and reigining league MVP Breanna Stewart may miss the upcoming start of the WNBA season.
The former C-NS standout was playing for Dynamo Kursk in the EuroLeague Final Four championship game when she suffered an apparent right foot injury in the first half. Stewart went up for a jump shot and landed awkwardly holding the back of her right foot in pain.
No official statement from Stewart’s WNBA Team the Seatle Storm has been made, but reports are that Stewart tore her right Achilles tendon.
Prayers up for @BreannaStewart who was carried off the court after an awkward landing on her ankle 🙏. #EuroLeagueWomen pic.twitter.com/5l89Vd6bsV— EuroLeague Women (@EuroLeagueWomen) April 14, 2019
She was helped off the court and would not return to the game.
Stewart finished last season as the leading scorer for the Seattle Storm at 21.8 points per game and was named WNBA MVP. She then led the Storm to its first WNBA Title defeating the Washington Mystics in three games.
The 2019 WNBA season begins on Thursday May 9th, with preseason games. The Storm take on the Phoenix Mercury on May 25th to open the regular season.
