Buchanan, Miller Selected in MLS SuperDraft

Syracuse sophomore forward Tajon Buchanan was selected with the ninth overall pick by the New England Revolution in the 2019 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft held on Friday, Jan. 11 in Chicago. Senior defender Kamal Miller was the 27th overall selection by Orlando City SC with the third pick of the second round. 
 
Buchanan’s selection marks Syracuse’s fourth top 10 draft pick in the last five years. Overall, he is the Orange’s seventh first-round selection.  Syracuse has now had at least two players selected in the MLS SuperDraft for the fourth time in the last five years.
 
Buchanan’s selection caps off a breakout season for the Brampton, Ontario native. He signed a Generation adidas contract after his sophomore season with the Orange when he recorded career highs in points (20), goals (8) and assists (4). He led the Orange in points and goals and ranked fourth in assists. Buchanan scored multiple goals in three matches, including a career-high three in Syracuse’s win against St. Bonaventure. He is the first member of the Orange to post 20 points in a season since Ben Polk had 28 in 2015.
 
As a freshman, Buchanan started all 18 games and tied for third on the team in points (10) and was third in goals (4). He was voted to the All-ACC Third Team as well as the ACC All-Freshman Team.
 
Miller was a four-year starter for the Orange on defense. He started all 17 matches in which he played in 2018, helping Syracuse to five shutouts, including a 2-0 win against No. 1 Wake Forest. Miller recorded an assist at No. 11 Louisville, increasing his career point total to 17.The Pickering, Ontario native earned All-ACC and All-South Region Third Team honors.
 
During his four seasons at Syracuse, Miller was part of the starting XI in all 77 matches in which he played. The Orange posted 26 shutouts, won an ACC Championship and advanced to the College Cup for the first time in program history during his career.
 
The first two rounds of this year’s draft were held in Chicago on Friday, Jan. 11. The third and fourth rounds will be held via a conference call on Monday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m.
