It’s the beginning of a new era at NewsChannel 9 WSYR-TV.
After more than 30 years at the anchor desk, Hall of Fame broadcaster Carrie Lazarus will be taking on a new role at the station, focusing on special events, major news coverage, and expanding her franchise, “Extraordinary People and Places of Central New York.”
“I came to Central New York for school and never looked back. Now it’s time for me to give back to the community in a new way,” said Carrie Lazarus. “I’m truly excited that NewsChannel 9 is giving me the opportunity to cover special local stories and dedicate more time to promoting young local talent and the arts in Central New York.”
“Carrie is a shining example of what NewsChannel 9 is all about,” said VP and General Manager of WSYR-TV Syracuse, Bill Evans. “She is committed to covering Central New York. Stepping out from behind the anchor desk will allow her to explore new ways to engage with the community, and shine a spotlight on our area.”
As Carrie moves to her new position, Christie Casciano will join Rod Wood at the anchor desk during the evening news.
“I’m excited to join Rod and all of Central New York every weeknight at 5:00 p.m.,” said Christie Casciano. “NewsChannel 9 is my home and I look forward to the challenge of covering Central New York in an exciting new role.”
Casciano will also anchor NewsChannel 9 First at 4:00 p.m., continue to anchor NewsChannel 9 Eleven at 11:00 with Rod Wood and maintain her role as the foremost crime reporter in Central New York with her “On The Lookout” franchise.
“Christie is one of the hardest working people in television,” said VP and General Manager of NewsChannel 9 WSYR-TV Syracuse Bill Evans. “She will bring that same drive to the anchor desk, without giving up her lifelong goal of making Central New York a safer place to live.”
An East Syracuse native, and a graduate of Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications, Casciano joined NewsChannel 9 in 1986.
The new line-up is effective Thursday, March 2.
