CENTRAL NEW YORK (WSYR-TV) — If you’re looking for something to do on Memorial Day this year, look no further than this list of Memorial Day events that are taking place across Central New York this weekend.
Memorial Day, which honors people who have died while serving in the U.S. military, is held on the last Monday of May, which will be Monday, May 29, this year.
Here is a list of Memorial Day events across the area this weekend!
Sunday
Syracuse
- Watchfire celebration at the fairgrounds at 5:00 p.m.
The Watchfire is hosted by the CNY Veterans Recognition Foundation (CNYVRF) at the NYS Fairgrounds. As a way to honor U.S. soldiers and veterans, the watchfire attracts many throughout Central New York to come and be a part of the patriotic ceremony. “…with over 1,000 American flags expected to be appropriately retired in a spectacular and dignified fashion,” said the CNYVRF’s website.
Monday
Canastota
- Memorial Day Parade starting at State Route 13 in Canastota at 10:00 a.m.
In conjunction with American Legion Post #140, the Village of Canastota is hosting its annual Memorial Day parade and remembrance ceremony. The parade steps off at the intersection of Wilson Avenue and N. Peterboro Street (State Route 13) and proceeds south on Peterboro Street through the village, ending at Clark Park, near the intersection with State Route 5. A public ceremony honoring members of the community who gave their lives in service to our county will take place immediately following the conclusion of the parade. Jordan
- Memorial Day Parade starting at Veterans Memorial Park at North Main Street at 2:15 p.m.
The Village of Jordan is hosting an all-day celebration with food, music and a parade on Memorial Day. The day starts at 7:00 a.m. at Peace, Love, Coffee Shop on Clinton Street and is open until 4:30 p.m. Then the chicken barbecue at First Baptist Church starts at 11:30 a.m. until sold out. The Jordan Historical Museum Open House will start at noon and Towpath Pizza will also open at that time as well. For those who want hamburgers, they can head to Burly’s Firehouse Pub on South Main Street at noon as well to get burgers, salt potatoes and more until sold out. Then for those who want hot dogs, they can head to the Hot Dog Stand at Jordan Masonic Lodge Front Yard at 1:30 p.m. until sold out. The service will start at 2:15 p.m.at Veterans Memorial Park followed by a moment of silence at 3:00 p.m. and a Parade of Bands at 3:05 p.m. Massing of the Bagpipes on North Main Street will follow after the parade.
Liverpool
- Memorial Day Parade in the Village of Liverpool starting at 9:00 a.m.
Minoa
- Memorial Day Parade in the Village of Minoa starting at 11:00 a.m.
The Village of Minoa is hosting the Memorial Day Parade on Monday and will follow with a Chicken Barbecue at the American Legion Post at 1102 Minoa Municipal Building.
Camillus
- Memorial Day Parade on Main Street in the Village of Camillus starting at 9:30 a.m.
The Village of Camillus Memorial Day celebration starts on Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. with a Wreath Laying ceremony at Camillus Town Hall. Then at 9:30 a.m. the parade will start featuring the West Genessee Alumni Marching Band following the start of the 5k run that starts at 9:25 a.m.
Solvay/ Geddes
- Memorial Day Parade at Woods Road Memorial Park in Solvay starting at 10:00 a.m.
The Memorial Day Parade sponsored by the Town of Geddes and the Village of Solvay will start at 10:00 a.m. in Woods Road Memorial Park. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved indoors to the Solvay-Geddes Community Youth Center, 1010 Woods Road. The ceremony is built around honoring any person from Solvay or Geddes who died in the service of their nation.
Navarino
- Navarino Fire Department Annual Memorial Day Chicken BBQ and First Annual Truck & Bike Show at 11:30 a.m.
The Navarino Fire Department is hosting its annual Memorial Day Chicken BBQ at the fire department on 3276 Amber Road. The BBQ will go on until it’s sold out. Then on Memorial Day on Monday, the parade will start at the firehouse at 1:00 p.m. and proceed on South on Amber Road with a ceremony at four corners.
Utica
- Memorial Day Parade starting at Genesee Street at 10:00 a.m.
The Memorial Day Parade on May 29 will start on Genesee Street, across from Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital.
Phoenix
- Memorial Day Parade starting at the Three Rivers Plaza and marching down Main Street at 12:00 p.m.
In the morning, starting at 7:00 a.m., the VFW Post 5540 will have an “Honoring our Veterans and those that died fighting ceremony.” Then at 10:00 a.m. in the United Methodist Church parking lot, Lock Street entrance, there will be cold drinks and a bake sale.
Weedsport
- Memorial Day Salute at the Weedsport Jr. Sr. High School starting at 9:00 a.m.
Students from all grade levels (Elementary, Jr High and High School) will participate by singing, playing musical instruments and representing our military service men and women.
There will be a ceremony beginning at 9:40 a.m. that will conclude with a Watch Fire to properly dispose of worn American Flags. In the event of inclement weather, everything will be moved into the high school auditorium. Visitors should feel free to bring a lawn chair and any worn American Flags for proper disposal.
