SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Millions of soccer fans all over the world watched the U.S. women take home their fourth World Cup on Sunday. New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio says a parade will take over Manhattan on Wednesday, welcoming the women home from France.
Here in Central New York, fans watched from Wolff’s Biergarten, a well-known football bar, to witness the women win it all.
For many, this win means more than just a first-place finish. It’s watching the women take center stage, a place many who grew up playing the sport never got to experience for themselves.
“I know just even going to college and playing competitively, our crowds were so much smaller than the men’s crowds. And now to see this type of crowds supporting the women’s game, everyone in America talking about it, the world really watching and streaming women’s soccer, it’s awesome to see,” Alexis Coughlin said.
An amazing win. The U.S. capped off their World Cup victory with a 2-0 win over the Netherlands.
