Future of 81

What the community grid means for getting to the Carrier Dome

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - For many drivers, the I-81 viaduct is an important part of the path to the University Hill area, including the Carrier Dome, the SU campus, Upstate, Crouse and SUNY ESF.

Its importance was not lost on State Department of Transportation engineers, who say they thought of that access in designing the community grid.

Planners say they didn't design the grid for peak attendance times like a Syracuse-Duke basketball game, but overall, there will be more ways to get to the Hill.

From the east, there will be new ramps to get off I-690 to Crouse and Irving Avenues, allowing a straight shot to the Carrier Dome.

From the north and west, I-690 will empty to Business Loop 81, then follow Almond Street to Van Buren Street to get to the backside of the Carrier Dome.

From the south, drivers can also use Business Loop 81 to Van Buren.

Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate Medical University and SUNY ESF have endorsed the grid.
