SYRACUSE,N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Syracuse shakes off a slow start to rout North Dakota by 36 points
Just like the men, the SU women are ranked in the Top 20 and have very high expectations for the season ahead. Unlike the men though, Coach Q's ladies did not have the benefit of playing a couple of preseason games. As a result, Quentin Hillsman watched his team struggle in the early going against North Dakota, only to pull away in the second half for an 85-49 victory.
The score was tied at 18 after the first quarter, but then Syracuse found its rhythm by outscoring the Fighting Hawks 23-12 in the second quarter. A couple of newcomers led the way in this one. Freshman Emily Engstler and Ohio State-transfer Kiara Lewis tied for team-high honors with 13 points apiece. Tiana Mangakahia and Miranda Drummond each chipped in with 11 points.
A key stat in this game was the turnover column. Syracuse forced North Dakota into 27 turnovers which directly led to 29 points for the Orange.
Next up for Syracuse is a trip to third-ranked Oregon on Saturday.
