'Social Security Scam' once again being reported in Central New York: Scam Watch

If you don't know the number calling, don't answer

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- Scammers are targeting phones across Central New York claiming to be from the Social Security Administration.

Several viewers tell NewsChannel 9 they received a voicemail saying:

"This call is from the Department of Social Security Administration. The reason you have received his phone call from our department is to inform you that we just suspend your Social Security Number because we found some suspicious activity. So, if you want to know about this case just press one.  Thank you."

The call is designed to convince people to give up their Social Security Number. Scammers are using them to commit identity theft and file false tax returns.

The Better Busines Bureau is reminding people legitimate Social Security inquiries will never ask for immediate payment, personal or credit card information, and they will always provide the option to appeal a payment.
