Most soon-to-be 7th graders spend the summer avoiding school work, but not Julia King.
She’s working on a book review blog and this week it went viral.
It starts at her book shelf. She’s a self-proclaimed “born reader” and she’s got the collection to prove it.
“She’s always been an avid reader. She’ll read 2-3 hours a day. She’ll read more than that if we don’t stop her,” says Julia’s dad, Andrew King.
Julia was struggling with her writing grade. It started to slip, so her dad- an English teacher- suggested that she start a blog.
Julia jumped at the idea saying, “At first, I wasn’t really that good at it and it would take me like a month to crank out one. But, as I progressed more, I got better and on my most recent post I hardly had to ask for help at all, just a few verb tenses and I was good.”
So good, in fact, that her blog landed on the website ‘Reddit.’
“People all over the world just started- they just started looking at my blog and by the end of the day I had over 50,000 viewers on this blog and a bunch of them were comments too,” explained Julia.
Her dad adds, “When the blog went viral, all of the sudden she had thousands of people from all different countries reading her blog and that, I think, blew her away.”
Like anything online, Julia’s blog wasn’t immune to criticism. But she’s not worried saying, “I’m okay. I can handle it!”
She plans to continue. Up next is her school summer reading book. You can find her reviews here: www.booksbyjulia.com
