Athlete of the Week: Solvay’s Lauren Nichols

Local News

Our latest Athlete of the Week has been the driving force behind the Solvay Bearcats softball team.

Last season, senior Lauren Nichols helped Solvay win their sixth straight league title.

“When I step out on the mound, I just think one pitch at a time, one batter at a time, one out at a time,” Nichols said.

On April 3, she stepped on the mound and tossed her second perfect game in the last year, striking out 15 batters.

“I was just really excited because we have been stuck in the gym for a month and a half now.  I was just so excited to get out on the field and pitch. I was really eager to just throw. While, it is a little bit of nerves because I don’t want to screw it up. It is a big relief after when you know you have it,” she said.

Her coach, Phil Merrill, said, “Every time she takes the ball, she wants to be perfect. She wants to be perfect every game. She wants every pitch to be where she wants it to go. She wants to hit her spots,  that type of thing. She is driven to be successful.”
