Auburn Doubledays drop a pair of games to State College

AUBURN, N.Y. (AUBURN DOUBLEDAYS) –

After a nine month wait to play their first game of the 2019 season, the Auburn Doubledays (0-3) needed to wait a little longer to record the last out. Torrential downpour made Leo Pinckney Field all but unplayable against the visiting State College Spikes (3-1), creating a rain delay which eventually lead to a doubleheader being played on Monday.

Five combined errors during Sunday afternoon’s first five innings led to a 6-5 Spikes lead before the game was ultimately called due to the elements. The action bled into the next day for State College, which still had one out to work with in the 2nd inning from the previous night’s contest. Nelson Galindez – taking over for Monday’s starter, Pedro Gonzalez (0-1) – walked four in a row, bringing in two runners to push the Spikes’ lead to 8-5. Due to Auburn’s four errors, Gonzalez took the loss after being pinned for seven runs – only two of which were earned.

The Doubledays answered back with two runs in the bottom of the 2nd to close the gap, but a three-run 3rd inning sealed the Game 1 victory for State College. Galindez surrendered three runs – two of which came off an Andrew Warner home run – before striking out his first and only batter of the game to end the inning. Auburn struck back for another pair of runs in the home half of the 3rd but was blanked the rest of the way through, dropping Game 1 by a score of 11-9.

Game 2 didn’t fare any better for Auburn as the Doubledays quickly fell behind 6-0 over the game’s first two innings. Stanley Espinal whacked a two-run dinger off starter Carlos Romero (0-1) in the 1st while Warner launched a three-run dong in the 2nd. Romero surrendered the final run of the contest in the 3rd when Andres Luna doubled in Dariel Gomez.

The Doubledays went quietly as Spikes starter Hector Soto tossed four innings of shutout baseball with Martin Cordova (1-0) shutting the door on the seven inning game.
