TOWN OF LEDYARD (WSYR-TV ) An Auburn man is under arrest after Cayuga County Sheriff’s deputies say he drove his SUV into a police car.
Investigators tell NewsChannel 9 that Sheriff’s deputies were assisting New York State Police on a domestic violence investigation along Levanna Road in the Town of Ledyard when the suspect in the investigation took off from the home in his modified Suzuki Samari SUV.
Sergeant Matthew Sloan was on the side of road is his marked police vehicle when deputies say the suspect approached and then swerved hitting the police vehicle head-on.
The police vehicle sustained heavy front end damage, the air bag deployed and caught fire. Sgt. Sloan and his K9 were able to get out of the vehicle safely. Sgt. Sloan quickly extinguished the vehicle fire.
The driver of the SUV, 28-year-old Shawn Holmes was taken into custody following a brief struggle. Holmes has been initially charged with attempted aggravated assault on a police officer.
Holmes was arraigned in Town of Throop Court and sent to the Cayuga County Jail on $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond.
Holmes’ next court appearance date is scheduled for October 30th in Town of Ledyard Court. The investigation continues and additional charges will be filed.
