More than 800 different types of plants are nice and warm inside Barone Gardens’ greenhouse as we inch closer to spring.
This is one of the busiest times of the year for Barone Gardens in Cicero. Orders are shipped across the state as people prepare to plant this spring.
The store ships more than two million plugs — plants in early stages that build roots to grow — a year, according to John Barone.
It’s been a struggle to move them in the harsh winter temperatures though.
“But the biggest challenge is when we ship the material out,” he said. “When it is so cold we ship a lot of materials in boxes through FedEx or other carriers and that gets to be a real problem and even when we ship in our own trucks, which are are heated, it is really hard to get around.”
Maintaining the plants is a priority as we slowly get closer to spring.
“A lot goes on that people don’t see, for sure,” Barrone said.
