Big second period surges the Comets past the Crunch

Syracuse Crunch

The Utica Comets surged in the second period to top the Syracuse Crunch, 6-2, tonight at the Adirondack Bank Center.

The Crunch opened scoring and held the lead twice in the first period, but the Comets dominated the middle stanza to build a three-goal lead before adding another goal in the third. The first regulation loss puts the Crunch at 2-1-1-0 this season.

Scott Wedgewood turned aside 32-of-38 in net for the Crunch, while Michael DiPietro recorded the win with 16 saves between the pipes for the Comets. Syracuse was unable to convert on five power play opportunities, but the penalty kill unit was a perfect 5-for-5.

The Crunch opened scoring 12 minutes into the game with a shorthanded goal. Dominik Masin forced a turnover as the Comets entered the zone and passed it ahead for Cory Conacher. He sped down the left wing and went top shelf over DiPietro. Chris Mueller recorded the secondary helper. Less than two minutes later, Utica evened the score when Jonah Gadjovich tipped Wacey Hamilton’s right point shot.

Syracuse went back on top with 18 seconds remaining in the first period. Luke Schenn started the play at the blue line as the power play time came to an end. He sent the puck down for Alex Barre-Boulet to fire from between the circles. That shot was blocked, but Mueller was there to sweep in the rebound.

With just three seconds remaining in the frame, the Comets tied the game for a second time. Sven Baertschi centered the puck from below the blue line for Dylan Blujus to finish off.

The Comets took the lead 12:23 into the second period. After a battle in front of the net, Francis Perron got a stick on the loose puck and sent it over the goal line. Two minutes later, Kole Lind set up Reid Boucher for a breakaway where he went five-hole. Utica then made it 5-2 during a 2-on-0 rush at the 15:46 mark. Goldobin carried the puck in and delayed until Wedgewood went down and he sent it over for MacEwen to go backdoor.

With 6:39 remaining in the game, the Comets added another. Vincent Arseneau got ahead for a short breakaway. His first shot was stopped, but he picked up his own rebound and potted it into an open net.
