FAIR HAVEN, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — There are plenty of campers claiming their sports in Fair Haven for Memorial Weekend, but there are a few things to keep in mind and a few limitations, starting with the boat ramp.
Earlier Friday, the state park had listed on its website that the boat launch was closed. We have now been told by the park manager that it is, in fact, open.
The two launches in the village are also open, so you can bring your boat in by Turtle Cove or the Little Sodus Inn.
The water, however, isn’t stopping anyone from enjoying the weekend, but it is something they have to be mindful of.
The Army Corps of Engineers’ weekly water level update came out on Friday and it marked Lake Ontario about 11 inches higher than it was in April. That’s only two inches below the record, which means boaters have to be extra careful on the lake.
“It won’t be as much fun ‘cause you can’t do the high-speed stuff, but you can take a nice ride around the bay, but not other things. It’s unfortunate it won’t happen this year,” said Village of Fair Haven Deputy Mayor Walter Krehling.
