TYRE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Two people, including a 5-year-old boy, drowned while on a fishing trip in Seneca County.
The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office responded to a missing person complaint around 9 p.m. Friday. Deputies say it was then that they were alerted about two individuals who failed to return from a fishing trip in the Town of Tyre.
Deputies described the scene as an area just off of South Mays Point Road. There, they conducted a search and found a vehicle, fishing equipment, and personal items in the water as well.
The Sheriff’s K-9 unit and the NYSP helicopter assisted with the search, which was suspended after 11 p.m. Friday and resumed early Saturday morning.
Shortly before 9 a.m. on Saturday, the Sheriff’s Office dive team recovered the bodies of Christoph Jones, 5, of Auburn and Essie Hall, 81, of Cayuga.
Deputies say that Hall was a close family friend who enjoyed taking Jones fishing.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say they believe the two slipped off the bank into the water. No foul play is suspected but the case remains under investigation.
